The American Bible Society surveys Americans every year to learn about the impact
the Bible has on our lives. Their “State of the Bible report” is of interest to pastors, teachers, seminaries, printing houses and discipleship ministries. One statistic that seems to hold steady is that 10% of Americans report that they read the Bible daily.

The survey reveals that fewer and fewer Americans view the Scriptures as important for life. The survey defines people as Biblically engaged if they read the Bible 3 or 4 times a year personally, not in a religious service. Three or 4 times a year??
The Bible is the Word of God, useful for doctrine, teaching, training in righteousness and gaining wisdom. The Bible inspires us with examples of people who stood for God in their own days. The Bible is our source document for Jesus’ first appearance, His teaching and His miracles, His sacrifice and victory. How can we know what God wants for us without knowing His Word? How can we hold to the Truth without knowing what the Bible says?

The Best Habit You Will Ever Have is to start your day by reading a portion of Scripture and praying for God’s wisdom, forgiveness and help. This is a daily Time Alone With God, a TAWG. Tell your family that you are making an appointment every morning. Find a place that helps you be focused and quiet. Find a Bible you can read and understand. Read it systematically, a book at a time, for 10 or 15 minutes every morning. Pray about what you read. God will speak to you through the Bible and your prayer time.

Search for your life verse (mine’s Prov 3:5-6). Find things that you don’t understand and come to church with your questions for me or for your Bible study teacher. Get involved with a regular Bible study with your fellow Christians. Model your love for the Bible to your children and grandchildren by telling them the Bible stories and reading the Bible to them at bedtime. Post Scripture verses on your mirror and your refrigerator so you can memorize them.
I want your life to be changed by your use of the Bible. I want you to wear a Bible out and need a new one!
A Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.
