We started our class studying through Psalm 119 last night. One thing we observed was that it’s a noisy world and there are lots of things with which to fill our minds besides Scripture. I realized last night how many Chicago, Doobie Brothers and Little River Band songs (also Charlie Pride) I could sing along to because I memorized those words. My kids quote movie characters.
But our Christian minds should be replete with memorized Scripture. How can we do it? We need to practice the simplest meditation; using Scripture verses as the seed for meditational thinking throughout the day. We need to rise in the morning and pick a verse, one verse, to say to ourselves all day as life happens.
Psalm 119 provides lots of verses that can be used in this way. Look at Psalm 119:29-39. Each different verse, would be great for a daily meditation. For instance, v 30 says “I have chosen to be faithful; I have determined to live by your regulations.”As you wake and rise, you could say this verse to the Lord and ask Him to let that verse guide you through the day. Meditate on the verse and see what God’s Spirit reveals.
The next morning, read v 31, “I cling to your laws, Lord, don’t let me be put to shame.” All day, remind yourself that you cling to God and His laws.
The next day, v. 36 “Give me an eagerness for your laws rather than a love for money.” While you are conducting your business and earning a paycheck, remind yourself over and over that you want to be more eager about God’s laws (statues, instructions, decrees, commandments) than you are for payday.
Or, v. 38 “Reassure me of your promise, made to those who fear you.” Start the day with a scriptural theme or goal. See how God shows you that His Word is true.
Start the day with one verse, a psalm or a proverb, and meditate on that verse all day, while you’re working. It’s amazing how God will use that verse to give you wisdom or encouragement or insight. We speak to Him in our prayers and our actions. He speaks to us by His Spirit through the Word of God. This is putting the Scripture to use in the world. This is thinking about theology while life happens. (Interpreting life through the revealed wisdom of God in the Bible!)
It will help us grow in our love for Jesus and our knowledge of His Word. The simplest meditation.
